Estranhos Encontros

A film festival, from discovering the film to the next screening.

Gabriel Souza2 min read

Estranhos Encontros is an international film festival in São Paulo. The site is the meeting point between the films and the people who want to watch them: it presents the programmes, gathers information about each work, and helps you find when and where every screening happens.

The experience combines the festival's graphic identity with a programme that has to work in practice, including on a phone, on the way to the cinema. The content is available in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.

Stack and implementation

Next.js · React · TypeScript · Tailwind CSS · Canvas API · PostgreSQL / Neon

The editorial content lives in Markdown files, with pages in four languages. Canvas generates the story posters in the browser. The interest list is stored in PostgreSQL on Neon; images have versions prepared ahead of publishing for different screen sizes.

An identity that fills the screen

The opening works with space, letters scattered across the screen and a geometric symbol in motion. As you explore the symbol, each area reveals a path into the content. Black and yellow carry that journey through.

A programme to discover by looking

On desktop, the posters appear together, like a cinema wall. Black gives the images room, while yellow and the dotted typography stitch the identity across the programmes. The schedule is also an invitation to stop, look and discover a film.

From interest in a film to the next screening

Each film has images, a synopsis, credits and details about the director. Times and screens appear on the same page, so discovering a work can turn straight into a trip to the festival.

A film becomes a poster to share

Inside each film, the generator builds a vertical poster with the image, title and screening details. There are three visual routes — Editorial, Colour field and Still — to choose, save and post to stories. The festival identity travels with the recommendation of whoever watched it, or wants to.

The festival in your hand

On the phone, the identity stays present and the navigation stays within reach of your thumb. The path goes from the opening to the programmes, from choosing a film to checking the screenings. After that, you can create a poster and take the recommendation to your stories.
